主题简介

This paper studies the effect of trade liberalization on health of workers in urban China. We also explore the channels through which this effect took place. We take advantage of exogenous changes of export tariff barrier faced by Chinese products since the reform and open policy in early 1990s and Chinas access to WTO in 2001.Using China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) data during 1993 to 2009 and prefecture-level tariffs each year, we find that the reduction  of export tariffs  faced by Chinese products improves health of workers in terms of self-reported health status, being sick or injured in the last four weeks, having trouble in working due to illness in last three months, The positive effects are more significant in low education group and female group. The export tariffs reduction increase wage income and working hours at the same time. We further show the evidence that export tariff reduction leads to less likelihood of being slim and lack of protein intake. The results suggest that the income effect dominate health outcome. Our findings provide evidence of trade liberalization on health from a labor market perspective.
